Materials are one of the main components of cost of production in a manufacturing industry. Impact of poor Material Requirements Planning is felt on two areas –

1. Build up inventory - locking up precious capital and mounting interest costs
2. Floundering production operations – resulting in
1. Missed on-time-deliveries to customers
2. Idle manpower – resulting in loss of morale.

Both have severe negative impact on the organizational profitability and survival. Hence, the importance of a robust Material Requirements Planning cannot be over-emphasized for a manufacturing organization.

Material Requirements Planning (MRP) uses four inputs –

1. BOM (Bill of Material) of the products
2. Materials available in raw material stores
3. Material that is on order
4. Production program

 
From those four inputs, MRP prepares a Master Bill of Material (MBOM) for the organization. From this MBOM, MRP gives out the useful information such as –

1. Total requirements of materials
2. Date-wise requirements of materials
3. Material Bottlenecks (materials that are required for production but are, as yet, not available in the organization)
4. And other relevant reports.

MRP software packages are available for the last thirty years – but they have been priced very exorbitantly and not within the reach of small and medium manufacturing organizations.

1. A strong role based security is built into the product – this prevents giving unauthorized access to people and thus prevents unintended damage to vital and sensitive data
2. While every one who can log into the system can have access to info – such persons can not modify any data for which their role does not have permission
3. Entry is restricted thru login name and password so that it is not possible for all and sundry to enter the system
4. One can not access the data unless the software is loaded on his computer system – this is an additional precaution besides login and password protections
