What is wrong with us Brahmins?

First - refusing to recognize the truth. We are refusing to see the writing on the wall. We do not wish to see and acknowledge truth. We do not wish to recognize that we have fallen from our ideals. We do not follow the path set for us by our elders. Bhagavad Gita sets us the characteristics of (1) Purity bith external and internal (2) Excellence (Tapas) (3) Cleanliness (4) Forgiveness (5) Honest living (6) Pursuit of Knowledge (7) wisdom and (8) Faith and devotion to God. Do we possess any of those traits fully now? We are not pure either internally or externally. We are not honest. We are not pursuing knowledge and no more are wise. We do not have faith - some of us are even converting to Christianity.

Second - We forgot our peple who gave thoer lives to protect us. How many of us heard of Sambhaji Rao Bhonsle let alone remember him? He was tortured when he refused to convert to islam. His eyes were plucked and chanted Siva Sthothram. He was skinned alive, he still chnated Siva Sthuthi. He was cut to pieces and thrown into a river - he gladly under went all this but refused to leave his faith. Phrithviraj Chouhan? Rana Prathap? Mangal Pandey?

Third - hankering after money. We should be hankering after knowledge but we are hankering after money. I have met any number of Brahmins who do not even know what their pravara is. How many of us know who our rushis are? What is our sutra? What is our veda? Bammera Pothana refused money and suffered punishment. How many of us remember his sacrifice or understand the real implications? We are ready now a day, to even convert our religion for the sake of money.

Fourth - We are not willing to learn our duties from our scriptures. There are two places you can find your duties (1) Manu Smruthi and (2) Maha Bharatha Anusasanika Parva. We are not wearing our Yajnopaveetham. We are not performing Sandhya Vandanam at least once a day. We are not performing Upanayanam for our sons. We are not performing the marriage for our daughters and allowing them to divorce at the drop a hat. We are telling lies right left and center. Brahmins are supposed to be immune to fear and suffering.

What should we do? Live honestly. Do not tell lies even to save your life. Learn your duties and fulfill them. Read Manu Smruthi and Maha Bharatha especially the Aunsasanika Parva. Encourage other Brahmins to follow the path of the righteous. Set high level of ethics for you and stick to them unscruplously.
